Spring is right around the corner. It’s a time of hope and renewal. We all look forward to seeing the earth begin to green and bloom. As you make your plans for outdoor activities and sprucing up your yard, don’t forget to pay attention to some of the issues that can dampen your spring season. Proper preparation can save a lot of headaches.
1. Spring Floods – make sure that your landscape is properly graded, that your downspouts are cleaned and that any buildup of water is pushed away from your house. This is also a great time to consider buying Flood Insurance. If you need help evaluating your risk of flood, I can help.
2. Ice Dams – these are a real hazard in the mountain areas. Even if the days grow warm, areas of your roof that remain shaded can build up ice and cause dams that force water backward under shingles. When that water later melts it causes damage to the structure.
3. Potholes – be extra aware as you drive to avoid potholes. Your collision coverage can help if you hit one, but steering clear of the hazard is always a better option.
4. Driveways – cracks in your driveway may have begun this past winter. As water enters the crack and freezes, these cracks grow. A few dollars at the home improvement center will go a long way to avoid costly repairs later. Fill the cracks while they are small.
Many Springtime issues can be protected against or insured for. Now is the time to make sure your insurance policy is up to date. You need to know what is covered, and what is not, so that you can be ready if Murphy visits this Spring.
